10 Tips for Super Defense Against the Flu
The normally flu-free summer was anything but this year, and many wonder if this fall will be a particularly nasty one for influenza and the common cold. Especially when you factor in the anticipated transmission of H1N1, or Swine Flu. Whether H1N1 is indeed worthy of the anxiety-inducing label “epidemic” remains to be seen. Though the outbreak has been moderate so far (in this country particularly) the illness has public health officials and medical professionals more than a little bit nervous.
But everyone agrees the worst possible thing we could all do at this moment is to panic. So lets all take a deep breath and get proactive: fight the good fight against germs! The many small steps you take against the common cold and flu this fall will also greatly protect you against any other illnesses.
Here are 10 Tips for Super Defense against seasonal cold and flu bugs.
1. Wash Your Hands
The simplest act, yet the most overlooked in fighting off germs. Up the frequency for hand washing, and make sure your children scrub for at least 20 seconds, or as long as it takes to sing the ABCs. Make sure to get front and back, in between fingers, and nail beds. Skip the antibacterials; they’re no more effective than regular soap and they have associated environmental and health risks (antibacterials are useless against viruses anyway).
2. Sanitize When You’re Out and About
Carry a non-toxic hand sanitizer in your purse or pocket for public outings, or daily germ killing at the office or gym. We love CleanWell’s delicious smelling herbal spray. Or make your own using these easy steps! Conventional sanitizers are loaded with potent chemicals, and the over-use of antibacterials wipes out the good bacteria with the bad, leaving nothing to build up immunity.
3. H2O to the Rescue
Sometimes in the colder months of the year we’re under the impression we don’t need as much water as we do in the hot ones. Not true. In fact we need just as much, and more still if you want to help your body flush out toxins, impurities, and fight illness. Keep the canteen at hand and make water the beverage of choice at mealtimes.
4. Eat Healthy
Foods provide a major line of defense for your body, but some are immune system all-stars. Carrots, kiwis, raisins, green beans, oranges, strawberries: they all contain such immunity-boosting phytonutrients as vitamin C and carotenoids. Cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, brussell sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower, are good sources of betacarotene and help protect against free-radical damage. Check out Eat Healthy for tons of easy and nutritious recipes for the whole family!
5. Sleep
Getting a full night’s sleep (and maybe a long nap on the weekend) goes a long way toward keeping your body’s immune system strong and ready to fight. When you start burning the candle at both ends, and sacrificing sleep, your resistance will be lowered and you’re more vulnerable to illness. The average adult needs about 6-8 hours of sleep. A newborn may need up to 18 hours a day, toddlers require 12 to 13 hours, and preschoolers need about 10 hours.
6. Stay Home When Ill
This is sometimes the most difficult piece of advice to follow. Today’s society doesn’t put much emphasis on taking time to heal your body or guard your health; it’s hard to disconnect or miss a day or two to stay in bed. But we’ve all had that one co-worker who passes their miserable cold to every single person in the building. For schools in particular, group immunity relies heavily on sick children staying home. Plan ahead and talk with your employer, friends and family to engage a support system in case you or your children need to stay home.
7. Cover Your Nose, but not with your hands!
The CDC recently revised the age-old proverb, “Cover your nose!”. When coughing or sneezing, yes, indeed, cover your mouth and nose to prevent the dissemination of your germs. But unless you wash up immediately afterward, your hands will only go on to spread those germs to door handles, computer keyboards, and other people. The CDC recommends turning inward, and letting your sleeve or arm catch your germs. Better yet, grab a tissue when you feel the tickle of a sneeze or cough. Then toss the tissue and wash your hands.
8. Exercise
Exercising bolsters the cells that fight off illness. Don’t neglect your exercise routine once the months turn colder, and keep the kids engaged in sports at school. Try making exercise a family group activity, whether it’s hiking, biking, yoga, or playing the Wii!
9. Keep Your Hands Off Your Face
Your eyes, nose and mouth are doorways for germs to enter your body. The main vehicle for getting to these doorways is your hands. If you have an itch, try using your arm instead of your hand or wash your hands before touching your face.
10. Relax
Stress and anxiety compromise immunity. Take some time every day to decompress and enjoy yourself. Cuddle up with your kids and a good book. Have a tickle-fest for some relaxing family laughter. Take deep, calming breaths any time you start to feel wound up.

Strollerskate Playdate
What a blast from the past! I know I had more fun strollerskating than I expected! Heather, Toni and I got the hang of it rather quickly. I am happy to announce that we did not have any injuries. Hayden, Audrey, Braden, and Avery attempted to skate as well. Hayden was the most skilled and even threw in some dance moves while skating along. He was a little firecracker! :)
We will be doing this again, soon. No worries to those who could not make it. Big thanks to Heather and Toni for participating.....probably against your will! :) I had fun!

Fire Station Tour
Fire Station #1 in Mesquite allowed us to come in and take a tour. The nice Fire Fighters showed us the fire truck inside and out including the lights and sirens. They also let us see a Fire Fighter in full gear and gave all the kids stickers and coloring books. We all had a lot of fun and look forward to doing another Fire Station Tour soon!
Barnes and Noble Children's Storytime
Barnes and Noble Storytime was a success! :) The kids sat around and did their best listening to the two
stories that were read to them. They were given a couple coloring pages to color after the reading. Great job listening and coloring! :)
After storytime, we strolled on over to Brooklyn's for some pizza. What great pizza they had! The kids seemed to really enjoy their fun day! :) Thanks to all that made it! I love hanging out with Luna Moms Club of Mesquite, Forney and Rockwall. You rock! http://www.meetup.com/newparents-556
(Sorry pics are backwards, but you can still see all the fun that was had!)

I had a member of our Luna Moms Club suggest a grocery store tour, so I called up the Signature Kroger in Rockwall. They were happy to take care of us! On Tuesday, the employees there took us around the store. They showed the kids the floral department, bakery, big fridge for produce, and they even had a chance to touch a lobster. What a fun learning experience! The kids had a blast! Thank you all for coming! :)

Splashing Around the Harbors
This Wednesday Luna Moms Club had an afternoon playdate at The Harbors in Rockwall. So, we brought our kids out to splash around in the water feature and eat great ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery. They all loved it! What a wonderful afternoon at very little cost! Plus it wore out all the kiddos and isn't that really the whole point?

Get F.I.T
F.I.T. – FIT factors that are in your control:
*Frequency, *Intensity, *Time
Are you seeing the results you would like from your Stroller Strides classes? Have you made some physiological gains but now have experienced a plateau? There are some factors that are within your control when it comes to seeing physical gains. Within the acronym F.I.T are ways you can take charge of your results…Frequency, Intensity and Time!
Frequency - How often are you going to class or getting workouts in? Adding another day may be the jump start you need to make those changes. If Stroller Strides classes are not an option as the extra day, add in a walking workout on another day.
Intensity - Are you giving it all you’ve got in your Stroller Strides workouts? It is easy to get complacent and “cruise” through class sometimes. Digging deep and giving that little extra push in each exercise will move you into a new level of fitness, as well.
Time - Your Stroller Strides class is your hour…the rest of the day tends to belong to your children. Are you making the most of that time and giving it all you’ve got? The time frame of your Stroller Strides classes are set, but the frequency and intensity of your workouts are variables you CAN CONTROL!

Ready 2 Run Program Started Yesterday
So, yesterday was the start of our new Ready 2 Run Program. We all met at Sunnyvale Town Center Park at 8pm for our warm-up, 15 minute run, and cool-down. It was so fantastic to have such great gals to start this program with! I had so much fun! Our next scheduled run with the group is this Sunday and I already cannot wait.
All this running and training makes me realize I want so badly to run the Half Marathon at White Rock Lake in December. I NEED to get ready for it! :)
So, tomorrow we were all headed to the Dallas Arboretum for a playdate, but it seems to be getting too hot. Lacy has been kind enough to allow us to crash her pad and have a playdate there tomorrow after class. Yea! We will have so much fun! I am really looking forward to it!
Well, I am waiting on my rugrats to finish lunch and then go down for a nap. Then, I get to clean....oh the joys of motherhood! Staying at home with my children is NOT...I repeat NOT an easy job! Although, I would not trade my life now for the world!
Maybe I can get a run in tonight after baths...hmmmm. I guess we will see! :)

First day to blog...EVER!
My name is Lindsay McAlester. I am the owner and instructor for my own franchise of Stroller Strides in Mesquite, Forney, and Rockwall area. I love SS and all it has to offer, so I figured I had so much to say......I could just say it here! I hope you all enjoy! :)
Today we had class in Sunnyvale at Town Center Park at 9am - 10am. I had a great time! As usual! It was a little warmer today than it has been, but it is officially Summer here in Texas! I do not know what it is about Summer......I love it! I know most people cannot wait for the Fall and despise of the heat we have here. I was born and raised here, so I am partial! What can I say?!
We had a playdate today at Harry Myers Splash Park in Rockwall at 10:45am. My kids had a blast! Thank you to Alicia form Luna Moms Club for providing popsicles! Yum! I am looking forward to Thursday, June 25th...There is a Mom's Night Out scheduled for 5:30pm. We are having a Martini Cruise on Lake Ray Hubbard! Yea!
I am also excited about having another playdate this week with all the cool Moms and kids! We are heading to the Dallas Arboretum on Friday, June 26th. Thanks to Lacy and her awesome membership....5 moms will get in FREE! Paying only for $5 for parking. What a steal! I think the kids will really enjoy their fountain area!
I moved my SS classes from indoors at Town East Mall on Tuesday's and Thursday's to outdoors at Sunnyvale Town Center Park from 8:30am - 9:30am. We should be able to beat some of the heat!
I am very excited to announce that I have started a new program called Ready 2 Run for SS of Mesquite, Forney, and Rockwall. The class is designed for the beginner and to accomplish a 5K run (3.1 miles). You'll learn about running form, injury prevention, increasing speed and distance, and choosing the right shoe. How fun... right?!
Lastly, I found out last week that I will be able to hold a Grand Opening in Rockwall at Harry Myers Park on September 1st! I am elated to have the opportunity to partner up with the City of Rockwall's Park and Recreation and bring Stroller Strides to their area!
I am loving my Stroller Strides life! :)
